PETER PARKER
- Peter Parker, who goes by his incognito name Spider-Man, is an orphan whose parents Richard and Mary Parker died in a plane crash.
- Peter was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City.
- His character mainly struggles with dealing with adolescence and finances.
- He was bitten by a radioactive spider which led him to acquire spider-related supernatural abilities.
- As Spider-Man, he is able to shoot spider webs, cling to surfaces, and discern danger with his “spider-sense”.
CHARACTERIZATION
- Prior to Spider-Man’s creation, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually considered sidekicks or supporting characters. Spider-Man broke that mold when he appeared in the early 1960s.
- Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens, served as a great role model. Young readers could relate to his teenage struggles.
- Spider-Man was struggling with his identity, shy in talking to women, and nerdy in general.
- Spider-Man did not have a superhero mentor, like Bucky to Captain America or Robin to Batman, so he had to learn himself.
- As the popular quote from Spider-Man goes: “With great power there must also come great responsibility”, which he learned from his Uncle Ben.
SUPERHERO COSTUME
- Spider-Man uses one outfit throughout his superhero career: a skintight Spandex-like suit which is red and blue and has a web pattern and a spider icon on the chest.
- He also wears red gloves, red boots, and a mask covered by the web pattern as well.
COMIC BOOK HISTORY
- The first comic book series Spider-Man was featured in was The Amazing Spider-Man published by Marvel Comics. The Amazing Spider-Man is also the longest lasting series of Spider-Man.
- At first, Peter Parker was a shy high school student from Queens. He then developed into a social and troubled college student.
- Later, he got married and became a high school teacher.
- In the late 2000s, Peter Parker’s character became a freelance photographer who is single.
- He joins the Avengers in the 2010s (the Avengers are Marvel’s flagship superhero team).
- Marvel has published comic books about alternate versions of Spider-Man.
- In Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter Parker is put in an alternate universe.
- In Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara is considered the Spider-Man of the future.
- In Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Peter Parker supposedly dies and another teenager named Miles Morales follows in his footsteps and becomes the new Spider-Man. Eventually, Miles works alongside Peter.
FILM, RADIO, AND TELEVISION
- Spider-Man is easily one of the most popular superheroes of Marvel and superheroes in general.
- He is a commercially successful character who has been well received as a superhero.
- He has appeared in all forms of media, from television series, to film adaptations, to merchandise, newspaper comic strips, and more.
- Danny Seagren was the first actor to portray Spider-Man in a live action skit from 1974 to 1977.
- In Spider-Man films, actors Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland have played the role.
- In animated films, Spider-Man has been voiced by Chris Pine and Jake Johnson.
- On Broadway in 2010, Reeve Carney starred as Spider-Man in the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
POWERS AND SKILLS
- One day after Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, he woke up with spider superpowers.
- It took some time before he figured out what he could do with his newly acquired abilities.
- He first intended to avenge his Uncle Ben’s murder. However, he then remembered what his Uncle told him, that “with great power comes great responsibility”, so decided to use his powers to fight crime and protect the people of New York City instead.
- His Spider-Man costume helps him keep his identity a secret.
- Spider-Man is able cling to walls because of his spider powers, which can be scientifically explained by Van der Waals force, the interaction between a surface and a body that is dependent on distance.
- Spider-Man also has superhuman strength, speed, balance, and agility.
- He is able to detect imminent danger because of his “spider sense” which is a sixth sense not everyone has.
- Original creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko depicted Spider-Man as intellectually gifted.
- Peter Parker is a genius in science, engineering, and mathematics, which is how he was able to construct his costume.
- Peter also makes devices that complement his powers, like the web-shooters on his wrists.
- The web-shooters help him trap and/or get hold of his enemies.
- He also constructed a spider-signal that acts both as a flashlight and a warning alert to his foes and other criminals.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
- He is accompanied by supporting characters Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson (his romantic interests), J. Jonah Jameson, Harry Osborn, and Max Modell.
- He encounters opponents Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and Venom.
- His other foes include Jackal, Hobgoblin, Chameleon, Kingpin, Mysterio, and Kraven The Hunter.
